Common Questions - Mastectomy

Q:  Are prostheses and bras covered by insurance? And how many can I get each year?

A:  Because all insurance companies and policies differ, we urge our clients to call their

insurance company and ask about their specific policy to get the exact number.

Generally, for example, Medicare will cover one (1) silicone breast prosthesis every

two years and four (4) bras every year.  They also cover two (2) leisure breast

prostheses every year.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama will typically cover one

     (1) silicone breast prosthesis and four (4) bras every year.

Q:  How much of the cost is covered by my insurance?

A:  Again, all insurances are different, depending on both deductibles and yearly out-of-

pockets in order to know what amount is covered.

Q:  Do I need to have a prescription from my Doctor? From whom should I get my

      prescription?

A:  Because our office is a Medicare provider, it is mandatory to have a prescription for

everything we sell, including post mastectomy products.  Prescriptions can come

from your oncologist, surgeon, or family practice doctor.

Q:  What are the options in swimwear?

A:  Our office carries swimsuits that a designed with a pocket to be worn with a

prosthesis.  There is also a specific style form available to be worn for frequent

swimmers that is chlorine/salt water resistant and shaped differently to allow for

water flow.  These items are not covered by insurance.  Swimsuits typically range

      from $55-$65.

Q:  What options are available if I have had a lumpectomy?

A:  For women who have had a lumpectomy, most insurance companies will cover a

silicone enhancer, as well as, bras to wear with the enhancer.
