Common Questions - Prosthetics

Q.  When facing an amputation, what is the best way to get information and advice?

A.  You can contact us at 1-800-457-4544 to set up a consultation before surgery.  At that time we have a number of different resources that we can supply you with and also answer any questions that you might have about  prostetic options.

Q.  How much does a prosthetic cost?

A.  Every person has different needs with their prosthesis, so not all prosthetic devices cost the same.  We accept most insurances and we will try to help you understand coverages and copays within your insurance coverage.

Q.  Are there any amputee support groups?

A.  You can call our office for these resources or the Amputee Coalition of America has a listing of support groups on their website www.amputee-coalition.org.

Q.  How long does it take to get a prosthetic device?

A.  The residual limb must heal before you can be fitted with a prosthetic device.  When you are ready is ultimantley up to your doctor.  Once a prescription has been written by your doctor the time varies depending on what type of prosthetic device is needed.  An approximate time line for delivery of a prosthetic device can be determined after the initial evaluation.

Q.  What happens after I am fitted with my prosthtic device and I am comfortable with its function?

A.  Follow-up visits with your Prosthetist should be scheduled periodically, every 3-6 months.  Proper fit and good aligment are keys to making the prosthesis useful to you.  Scheduling regular maintenance and repairs will help keep your prosthesis functioning effciently.
