Local Firm to Host Open House for Breast Cancer Survivors

October marks the 21st year of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Thursday, October 27th a local medical firm will be hosting an open house in honor of all those individuals who have fought and who continue to fight breast cancer.

Alabama Artificial Limb & Orthopedic Service, Inc. (AAL&OS), in conjunction with the Amoena Company, is hosting this special day to salute breast cancer survivors and to highlight the ways in which the company can assist the survivors with their unique needs. The company has a mastectomy division that provides professional fittings for post-surgical breast forms and accessories. Laura Saucer, R.N., M.S.N., is the company's certified mastectomy fitter.

"I felt that we needed to make breast cancer survivors aware of our recent commitment to them," said Glenn Crumpton, vice president of AAL&OS. "We are now working to make our facility a center of excellence in post-mastectomy care, and we wanted to give the public an opportunity to meet us and discover what makes us special."

The open house is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will be held at the company's facility located at 1223 East South Boulevard. Kimberly Kotch, a professional representative from Amoena will be available to assist with fittings and to consult with breast cancer survivors about the company's post-breast surgery product line.

"We decided to host an open house because we wanted to do our part to promote breast cancer awareness month and support breast cancer survivors," said Saucer. "Despite the growing awareness of breast cancer, there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection of breast cancer at all. If all women over the age of 40 took advantage of early detection methods, breast cancer death rates could drop as much as 30 percent."

AAL&OS and Amoena are offering free 2005 exclusive, limited edition breast cancer awareness pins to all those who attend the open house. Babs Beaty, a 9-year breast cancer survivor from Salt Lake City, Utah, designed this year's commemorative pin.

Alabama Artificial Limb & Orthopedic Service, Inc. is a fully accredited facility and is located at 1223 East South Boulevard in Montgomery, AL. The company also has an office located in Opelika, AL.
